President Trump visited House Majority Whip Steve Scalise Wednesday night at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where the Republican congressman is being treated for gunshot wounds after the morning shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Virginia.
"We want to express our appreciation for the men and women who run towards danger especially the Capitol Police and Alexandria City Police - without their presence this morning it could have been even worse", organizers said.
The business of the House is resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game.
He released a statement saying, "my prayers are with my good friends and D.C. roommate Steve Scalise".
Palmer, who was playing shortstop and about 20 yards from Scalise at second base, suggested that the gunman may have been targeting Mississippi Rep. Trent Kelly, who was near him at third base. The Times-Picayune will be in Washington to track changes in Scalise's condition and any developments with the Louisiana delegation and the investigation. "He was going after elected officials".
The shooting happened in the 400 block of E. Monroe Street.
In a statement, President Trump said he and Vice President Mike Pence were monitoring developments closely.
Steve Scalise is the third-highest ranked member of the Republican leadership in the House, and has the hard job of trying to keep order in the fractious party ranks and rounding up votes for bills.
