Who was present during the GOP baseball practice shooting

Steve Scalise, the Republican leader wounded in a gunman's attack on Wednesday on people practicing for a charity baseball game, is a staunch conservative and key figure in trying to push legislation through the U.S. House of Representatives. Now out of surgery, he remains in critical condition, according to MedStar Washington, the hospital where he and another shooting victim were taken.

Also wounded was former congressional aide Matt Mika, who now works for Tysons Food in its Washington office.

"It's too early to tell" if members of Congress were targeted, Slater said at a brief news conference at the scene.

The FBI is taking over the investigation, Brown said in a midmorning update, because the attack involved violence against a federal officer.

Doyle said the two Capitol police officers assigned to Scalise returned fire during a barrage of gunfire at the congressional Republicans' baseball practice.

"And we all laid flat, and the pops got louder - so I think the shooter was coming across the baseball field towards everyone".

"Everyone on that field is a public servant", Trump said, his tone somber, America's acrimonious politics set aside for the moment.

"Members are not looked out at people anymore", Barton said.

"They don't have the protection that we have here", he said.

Ms Reba Winstead, who lives near the park, said: "I was on my front porch when I heard the first round of shots".

But if Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, have devoted the years since her shooting to tightening gun control laws, Scalise is unlikely to follow the same path, based on his record.

Trump said in a tweet that Scalise "was badly injured but will fully recover", adding, "Our thoughts and prayers are with him".

"He's loyal to the person he's assigned to protect", Brooks said of the officer.

"Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone", Scalise's office said in a statement.

"It's a good time to revisit: are we adequately supporting the Capitol Police in terms of the equipment they have and in terms of their communications ability and those subjects?" he said.

Sen. Bernie Sanders issued a statement saying the suspect apparently had volunteered on his presidential campaign.

The GOP lawmakers that make up a 34-member team had been practicing for Thursday's annual charity congressional baseball game.

Hodgkinson, who died later, had been hanging out for weeks - often early in the morning -at the YMCA next to the park.

The man calmly asked which party's lawmakers were practising and Mr Duncan told him they were the Republicans. "Scalise's security detail and Capitol Hill police immediately began to return fire and Alexandria police also immediately came and began to return fire", he said.

Before becoming majority whip, Scalise was chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, which includes more than 170 conservative lawmakers.

Stephen Brennwald, an attorney who said he saw the man every time he visited the facility recently, said he never recalled him talking to anyone.
