A wildfire that began Friday July 7, 2017 in the grassy foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains destroyed homes and forced evacuations in the Northern California community of Oroville.
However, the blaze weakened significantly Monday and waves of the thousands of Oroville residents whose homes were evacuated at the fire's peak were being allowed to return.
The so-called Wall fire has burned more than 9 square miles and is 45 percent contained, reports the Sacramento Bee.
In the U.S. West, where more than 50 uncontained large fires are burning, temperatures in many locations will top 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) this week with only scattered showers to possibly quell some flames, said meteorologist Brian Hurley of the National Weather Service.
Canada's Minister of Public Safety Ralph Goodale said in a news conference Monday that an additional 300 personnel were on their way to assist.
As crews in British Columbia continue to battle over 200 wildfires across the province, Coast Capital Savings, Canada's largest credit union by membership, has committed $20,000 to the Canadian Red Cross. It was 20 percent contained. "We are keeping a close eye on that". But firefighters say given the number of fires that have broken out here this year, neighbors should also remain prepared.
"At this time, I think that we're fine, but each day brings a new set of circumstances", said Steve Robertson, vice-president of corporate affairs at Imperial Metals Corp.
The fires have left thousands without power, according to BC Hydro and Power Authority, one of the province's electricity distributors, which said it had 100 crews working to fix electrical infrastructure. "I've never seen as many fires all start pretty much in about a two-hour period".
RCMP Staff Sgt. Annie Linteau said in a statement Wednesday, "as far as the comments made by Chief Alphonse, we do not believe the comments made are reflective of the recent and continued meetings and conversations we have had with the chief".
He added reservations on all 18 of the resort's cabins have been cancelled, but a half dozen helicopter pilots and engineers fighting fires in the area have been staying there since nearby 100 Mile House was evacuated.
The Prince George fire centre is dealing with its own issues - the Sutherland Road fire is at 1,800 hectares, the Grizzly Lake fire is 215 hectares and Tatelkuz Lake fire is over 1,000 hectares.
The fire destroyed two airport hangars, around 30 homes in a trailer park in Boston Flats and three or four home on the Ashcroft Indian Band reserve.
Rapidly spreading wildfires in British Columbia are set to tighten the supply of wood products and raise prices as they disrupt timber operations during the year's peak building season, industry and analysts said on Tuesday.
Speaking to the incidents of looting that have been reported upon, Linteau said the RCMP are monitoring those closely.
