Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani on Friday announced the launch of the JioPhone, a 4G-emabled feature phone at virtually no cost and bundling it with lifelong free voice calls with cheap data packages.
In today's AGM meeting, it is expected that Ambani may announce the launch of its 4G enabled feature smartphone.
The Jio Phone is effectively free but to avoid any misuse from the users, the company is charging Rs. 1500 as a refundable deposit and this deposit will be given back after three years. The JioPhone will be available for beta testing starting August 15 and pre-booking will begin on August 24 August.
On the sensational growth reported by Jio after its launch previous year, Ambani said Jio has stunned the world, adding 7 customers per second on an average.
The JioPhone, as claimed by the company, is the most intelligent feature phone to be launched in the country. The users will have to deposit Rs. 1500 with Jio which would be refunded completely after a span of 3 years. Jio will provide this at only Rs. 153 per month. that is one-thirtieth the price. Users can connect the JioPhone to their TV, and they can use it to cast content from their feature phone to their TV. As a feature phone, the device has an alphanumeric keypad, and a small 2.4-inch colour screen. This means users can watch a movie on the JioPhone via JioCinema app or listen to music using JioMusic app. Reliance Jio JioPhone can be used to browse Internet as well, though that's optional.

You can browse internet on the JioPhone as well and comes pre-loaded with Jio apps. Also, there are features like emergency alert and voice command on Jio phone. Jio has 125 million customers today, added 7 customers per second every single day.
On Reliance Industries' telecom arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm, the RIL CMD said team Jio has stunned the world, over delivering on "the 100 million target I had set for them". We believe a feature phone with NFC payments capability will offer a huge push to the Digital India initiative. Jio also promised to bring affordable plans for JioPrime members. Users can avail unlimited free data for Rs. 153 per month on Jio feature phones.
Reliance Jio plans on doing this by integrating KaiOS based on Mozilla's Firefox OS.
The brand has also come up with two sachets, Rs 24 and Rs 54, which include the above-mentioned benefits but for limited validity.
