Thousands of flights have been canceled in Florida - many preemptively - amid a rush of fliers trying to flee the state ahead of Irma's possible landfall this weekend.
But three major airlines told BuzzFeed News that this is all a misunderstanding and not a purposeful act.
Florida's largest airport is picking up the pieces after taking a hit from Hurricane Irma - and it's unclear when it'll be up and running again.
Flights at Key West's airport ended Thursday, a day later than the airport originally said. He added when he arrived at the airport there were only about 20 parking spots left for his auto, and that it ended up staying on the ground level.
Floridians are facing a worsening gasoline shortage as motorists hitting the road to avoid Hurricane Irma's path. As of 4 p.m. on the 7th, the airport reported 24 scheduled flight cancellations, 13 arrivals and 11 departures.
"A lot of airlines don't want to have to cancel flights they don't have to, they want to get you where you need to go", Shannon Sumrall, spokesperson with Nashville International Airport, said. Those airports are expected to close Friday night. Facing backlash, some airlines have capped prices on any remaining direct flights out of Florida. "As DL302 departed, it followed the gap between Irma's outer band and the core of the storm, allowing the aircraft to navigate in relatively calm air", it said.
"It's just the computer programs doing what they do when it's last minute and seats are scarce", Hobica said. "When it was a hurricane of category 5, I had the bitch", he confessed.
One woman, who wouldn't give BuzzFeed News her name, said she was vacationing from Honduras but cut her stay short. She thought she was going to go to Orlando and ride out the storm, but her parents wanted her back in their arms.
That flight would have run about $2,000, she said.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giménez dashed hopes that Irma could be spent by the time it reaches the USA mainland. Fisher also said the NCAA has been helpful with granting waivers so that the university can provide assistance. "It wasn't because I was scared", he insisted.
He failed to get one as the stores were all out of stock, so chose to chance his luck and arrived at Miami International Airport to buy a plane ticket with his pet in tow.
