Stephens battles Sevastova, and fly, at the US Open

Vandeweghe won the U.S. Open junior title in 2008 at the age of 16.

An emotional Sloane Stephens continued her remarkable comeback by defeating Anastasija Sevastova to reach the semi-finals of the US Open in NY.

'It's been a great two weeks for American tennis, ' said Williams.

Stephens was just trying to regain her footing and timing in July after almost a year off with a foot injury, but she has returned somehow better than ever. Her smile radiated. Her daughter was healthy after foot surgery last winter, grateful for that and into the semifinal. Carreno Busta said, "It's something that I always dreamed about but something I never thought was going to arrive here".

Stephens was hailed as the natural successor to the Williams sisters when she made her first grand slam semi-final in Australia in 2013, but had struggled to back it up until now.

Venus, who first made her Top 5 debut back on July 27, 1998, could climb as high as No.2 if she wins the US Open.

The Rancho Santa Fe resident reached the women's semifinal after defeating No. 1 seed Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in a quarterfinal match Wednesday. "She's a great leader", Stephens said. I followed up and asked her to compare her frame of mind then to now. "Yeah, there is not really much to say other than it's wonderful". "She played fantastic points in the end". This year's Australian Open and Wimbledon runner-up is the US Open's oldest semi-finalist and the oldest in any Slam since Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon in 1994.

The 12th-seeded Spaniard easily handled his first match of the tournament against an opponent who was not a qualifier.

Awaiting him in the semi-finals will be Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, who defeated Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in the earlier quarter-final over twelve hours earlier.

Vandeweghe and Keys will now battle it out to determine which one of them will make it to their first finals in a major.

Without doubt, it has been Venus' best season in slams for years and even she has found it hard to get to the bottom of the reasons behind her terrific form, when quizzed in press conferences. "So it took a while to accept some limitations", Williams said.

Each player has won four breaks, and the comparison of the shots, winners and unforced errors was also very tight: 31-25 for the American, 39-41 for the Latvian.

Even without Serena, there is hope for the American women at this US Open.

Brady, 22, turned pro after her sophomore year at UCLA and has now reached the fourth round in Australia and NY.

Reaching the Australian Open final earlier this year was already quite a feat.

Querrey was trying to give the USA its first men's semifinalist at its home major since Andy Roddick in 2006.

"She's who everyone looks up to".

Mike Bryan has become the winningest men's doubles player with his 1,052nd career victory.

Kvitova, back to her best after a career-threatening injury, was up a break in the decider but the 13th seed allowed Williams back into the contest and the American was the more composed player in the tie-break.
