The company's Windows 10 chief has tweeted that developing new features and hardware for the Mobile version of the OS was no longer a "focus". "But building new features/how aren't the focus", Belfiore explained. But again, the lack of available users on the platform meant the developers would rather invest their time developing apps for iOS and Android who have a major share in the market.
"We have tried VERY HARD to [incentivize] app devs", Belfiore wrote.
As much as Microsoft tried, the company couldn't quite turn Windows Phone into a mainstream platform.
Belfiore said: "We'll continue to support the platform.bug fixes, security updates etc".
After the news that HP Inc had been forced to kill off its plans for expansion of the X3 range, the last current line of devices, Microsoft, has confirmed what we've all known for a while. As VentureBeat reported, Microsoft laid off nearly 2,000 employees in 2016, which mostly affected its mobile hardware division in Finland. However, the user base of Windows phone is just too small to get their interest. "Choose what's best for you".
The browser allows users to share websites, apps, photos and other information between phones and Windows PC. Even Belfiore admits he switched to Android for the app and hardware diversity.
It's been pretty obvious for a while that smartphone domination was turning into a two-horse race - it's just that a decade ago, you'd have thought that at least one of those horses would have Microsoft, BlackBerry, Nokia or Palm branding.
It can be recalled that Windows Phone had gained popularity for the interactive interface which impressed tech critics.
